The material for this video was shot at the Black Sea, in Bulgaria, in SECAM system. It was then edited on NTSC based AVID system in the U.S. without transferring. The result is a black and white stretched image, rich in glitches and noise caused by the manipulation with an incompatible source. The NTSC master copy was then transferred into PAL and brought back to the Balkans… In this video association APSOLUTNO presents the view of the Balkans from the outside as a view which is not direct, but rather mediated through a filter of technology, and media representations based on various assumptions. Through these filters the Balkans is presented as something IN BULK, a distant black and white mass, without a structure or organization. The image is hardly readable as it lacks clarity. ABSOLUTELY DEADThe video is a pseudo-documentary of a pseudo-investigation into a death case. The victims are two half-built and abandoned trans-oceanic liners, left at the shipyard in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, between the 1,258th and 1,259th kilometer of the Danube. The video features the members of APSOLUTNO as detectives who undertake a detailed investigation into the condition of the ships: the interior of the ships is examined thoroughly, while textual details about the ships appear on the yellow emergency ribbon on the screen. The final conclusion is that it is impossible to state any causes of the death of the ships with certainty and that this is a case of absolute death.

GOOD EVENINGThis video refers to the 'evening' of the millennium and the impact of the media on the experience of reality - questioning the way the media present information as fact. The video adopts the recognizable framework of TV news by utilising the first two words news presenters utter when addressing viewers. Transmissions from the TV channels of various countries, involving numerous languages, were appropriated. SERBEIKOSERBEIKO is a video installation which represents a strong association of reading of times. It is an authentic interpretation of social circumstances in Yugoslavia/Serbia. At the same time this video installation emphasizes an ironic perspective on the absolutely exact (Serbian) time. As a direct associative connection of the precise control of time, the well known logotype of the famous Japanese company SEIKO was taken as a basic platform for the name of the installation. The name SEIKO was visually transformed into SERBEIKO - this enabled perseverance of the sound association of the title of the installation in relation to the original sample. As a metaphor of an absolutely real fact (arf), in this video installation computer and graphic animation of the clock-image taken from the state television broadcasting - RTS (Radio Television of Serbia) is used. |
