No horses on Mars

Bea de Visser

No horses on Mars, 14:54 min, Color, Netherlands, 2024

‘No hoses on Mars’ is based on facts of observations that emerge from previous studies on the horse – such as behaviour, perception, brain functioning, hearing – but plays with the conventions of fiction. The film bends those research results to an imagination of the perception of ‘the other’, an animal, the horse, and wants to see her for who she is, the same as us and different at the same time.

Bea de Visser is recognized for her film art, installation work and sound performances. Her work can best be described as a digital media-based practice – from the perspective of a painter and storyteller who looks at the world through different lenses. Animals are a recurring motif in her work. Her work seduces the onlooker by a rich cinematographic language, that is poetic in nature, and told by alternative narrative form.
